Ionic bonding is a type of chemical bonding that occurs between a metal and a non-metal. It involves the transfer of electrons from the metal to the non-metal, resulting in the formation of positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). The opposite charges of the ions attract each other, leading to the formation of a strong bond. This results in the formation of ionic compounds, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), where the sodium ion (Na+) and chloride ion (Cl-) are held together by the attraction of their opposite charges. **
